Nano Banana Pro - giving an AI portrait a real background
Swap a flat studio void for a real place so your AI portrait stops looking like a test shot

Ever make an AI portrait that's technically fine but the background behind her looks like nothing?
That was my first few tries on this one. The face was good and the light was fine, but behind her was a flat studio void that just read as empty. I kept pushing the background until it felt like a real place, and the model herself barely changed the whole time. Here's the progression.
Here's my exact process.
1. Start with the empty void
This is where I started. A deep near-black seamless with one dramatic light on her.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph taken in a dark editorial photo studio from the start — not a replacement or composite. Rebuild the entire scene as if shot natively here, with unified lighting across the subject and the environment. THE VIBE: A moody prestige power-editorial portrait — quiet dominance, expensive restraint, cinematic shadow. She owns the frame without effort. The kind of image that anchors a luxury campaign. IDENTITY LOCK: Preserve the woman — mid-to-late-20s American, fair warm lightly-tanned skin with a faint dusting of freckles, long warm chestnut-brown hair, warm brown eyes — from the first reference. Do NOT source face, hair, skin, or outfit from any other reference. THE SUBJECT: She stands in a relaxed but commanding waist-up posture, weight settled onto one hip, shoulders back and squared, one hand slipped into the pocket of her blazer, the other relaxed at her side. She wears the same sharp, relaxed charcoal wool blazer with structured shoulders and the fine cherry-red silk detail just visible at the lapel, from the first reference. Her chin is level, her gaze steady and direct into the lens — calm, confident, unhurried. Hair falls with soft natural movement over one shoulder. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation and a soft directional sheen. Fair warm skin with visible pores, a light natural flush, faint freckles over the nose and cheekbones. Eyes: warm brown irises with a soft catchlight, individual lashes with a natural curl. Hair: individual strands with a few soft flyaways and natural highlights. THE SETTING: A deep charcoal, near-black studio seamless, softly graduated from near-black at the edges to a faint warm glow behind her — empty, minimal, moody, no props. The darkness swallows the corners of the frame. THE LIGHT: A single hard directional key light raking in from front-left, sculpting one side of her face and body into bright relief while the far side falls into deep shadow — dramatic chiaroscuro, low-key, high-contrast. A subtle cool rim light kisses the edge of her hair and shoulder to separate her from the black background. The same hard key motivates every highlight; her shadow falls consistently to frame-right. THE KEY DETAILS: The cherry-red silk edge at the lapel glinting as the single point of colour in an almost monochrome frame; the sharp specular highlight along her cheekbone from the hard key; the deep shadow pooling on the shadow side. THE MOOD: A moody luxury editorial campaign — controlled, powerful, cinematic. Colour grade: desaturated-warm, rich blacks, restrained. THE COMPOSITION: She sits slightly off-centre on a rule-of-thirds line, waist-up, generous near-black negative space filling the rest of the frame, adequate headroom. Eye-level. THE CAMERA: Cinematic editorial capture — an 85mm-equivalent lens, shallow depth of field, a single hard low-key studio strobe with a cool rim, rich desaturated-warm grade with deep blacks, in the restrained gritty manner of a David Fincher frame. Eye-level, straight-on.
It's clean, I'll give it that. But the background isn't doing any work, so the whole thing feels like a test shot. Your eye goes behind her and finds nothing to look at.
2. Add texture and a hard shadow
First fix was to give the wall something to say. A real plaster-and-concrete wall, with hard slatted light raking across it.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph taken on a moody editorial studio set from the start — not a replacement or composite. Rebuild the entire scene as if shot natively here, with unified lighting across the subject and the environment. THE VIBE: A high-end power-editorial portrait with graphic drama — hard light slicing across a raw textured wall, deep cinematic shadow, expensive restraint. She commands the frame; the architecture of light gives it edge and depth. THE SUBJECT: She stands in a relaxed but commanding waist-up-to-thigh posture, weight settled onto one hip, shoulders back and squared, one hand slipped into the pocket of her blazer, the other relaxed at her side. Her face and front stay cleanly lit and crisp, not broken up by the background shadow. THE SETTING: Behind her, a raw warm-grey textured plaster-and-concrete wall, close to her, filling the frame — subtle trowel marks, fine cracks, tonal patina, a lived-in surface with real character. Not a clean seamless — a real, imperfect wall. THE LIGHT: A single hard directional key rakes in from steep frame-left, throwing bold, hard-edged bands of light and shadow across the textured wall behind her — strong graphic diagonal slats of brightness and deep shadow, as if light cuts past an unseen structure. The same hard key cleanly sculpts her face and body in bright relief, a warm glow on the lit side falling to rich shadow on the far side. A subtle rim separates her hair from the wall. Every highlight and the wall's shadow bands are motivated by that one key; her shadow falls consistently to frame-right. THE KEY DETAILS: The graphic slatted shadow pattern raking across the wall as the visual hook; the cherry-red silk edge at the lapel as the single point of colour; the texture of the plaster catching the hard grazing light; the sharp specular highlight along her cheekbone. THE MOOD: A moody luxury editorial campaign with architectural edge — controlled, powerful, cinematic. Colour grade: desaturated-warm, rich blacks, restrained. THE COMPOSITION: She sits slightly off-centre on a rule-of-thirds line, the patterned wall filling the negative space behind her, adequate headroom, portrait orientation. Eye-level. THE CAMERA: Cinematic editorial capture — an 85mm-equivalent lens, shallow depth of field softening the textured wall just behind her while she stays razor-sharp, a single hard low-key studio strobe with a cool rim, rich desaturated-warm grade with deep blacks, in the restrained gritty manner of a David Fincher frame. Eye-level, straight-on.
Now there's depth and a bit of drama back there. Better, but it still reads as a studio with a nice wall, not a place she's actually in.
3. Put her somewhere real
So I dropped her into an actual location. A high floor at dusk with the city lights glowing below her.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph taken inside a high-floor executive penthouse office at blue hour from the start — not a replacement or composite. Rebuild the entire scene as if shot natively in this space, with unified lighting across the subject and the environment. THE VIBE: Above-it-all executive power at dusk — a woman at the top of a glass tower with the whole city glittering below her. Expensive, cinematic, aspirational. Quiet dominance over a world seen from above. THE SUBJECT: She stands near a floor-to-ceiling glass corner, turned slightly toward the lens, weight settled onto one hip, shoulders back, one hand in her blazer pocket, the other loose at her side — a relaxed, commanding stance. She wears the same sharp, relaxed charcoal wool blazer with structured shoulders and the fine cherry-red silk detail at the lapel, from the first reference. Chin level, gaze steady and direct into the lens, calm and unhurried. Hair falls with soft natural movement. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. Fair warm skin with visible pores, faint freckles over the nose and cheekbones. Eyes: warm brown irises with a soft catchlight from the city glow, individual lashes with a natural curl. Hair: individual strands with a few soft flyaways. THE SETTING: A minimal, dark, expensive high-rise office — floor-to-ceiling glass meeting at a corner beside her, and beyond it a vast city skyline far below, stretching to the horizon: countless tiny window lights, glowing skyscrapers, faint streaks of traffic on the streets below, a deep blue-to-indigo dusk sky above. Inside: a dark polished stone floor catching the city glow, the out-of-focus edge of a sleek leather chair in the near foreground as a framing occluder, clean minimal architecture. Not a bright showroom — a moody, lived-in corner suite at nightfall. THE LIGHT: All light from practical sources — cool blue dusk light spilling through the glass, the warm scatter of the city lights below, and a single low warm interior accent (a recessed downlight) grazing her from above-front to rim her hair and shoulders. Mixed colour temperatures: cool window light on the shadow side, warm interior accent on the key side. Deep natural shadows, no studio fill. Her highlights and the reflections on the floor share the same sources. THE KEY DETAILS: The glittering skyline bokeh through the glass as the visual hook; the cherry-red silk at the lapel as the single warm point of colour; faint reflections of the city in the dark glass and polished floor; the warm rim on her hair against the cool blue window. THE MOOD: An aspirational executive-power campaign at dusk — cinematic, restrained, powerful. Colour grade: cool-and-warm teal-orange, rich blacks, moody but polished. THE COMPOSITION: She stands off-centre on a rule-of-thirds line, the glowing skyline filling the negative space beside and behind her, the foreground chair edge adding depth, adequate headroom, portrait orientation. Eye-level. THE CAMERA: Cinematic capture — an 85mm-equivalent lens, shallow depth of field melting the skyline into soft glowing bokeh while she stays razor-sharp, all practical light, a restrained teal-orange grade with deep blacks, in the vast, moody manner of a Denis Villeneuve frame. Eye-level.
This is where it started feeling like a real shoot. She's somewhere now, and somewhere that looks expensive, which does half the selling for you.
4. Go big with the location
Then I pushed the scale. Her standing outside a massive, heavily decorated building in the late golden light.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph taken outdoors at the foot of a colossal, ornate building at golden hour from the start — not a replacement or composite. Rebuild the entire scene as if shot natively here, with unified natural light across the subject and the environment. THE VIBE: Opulent, monumental power — a lone woman standing outside a vast, maximalist palace of a building, dwarfed by its grandeur yet completely composed and in command. Cinematic, aspirational, imposing. THE SUBJECT: She stands outside the structure, at the base of its monumental steps, a three-quarter-length figure in the lower portion of the frame, turned slightly toward the lens with her weight on one hip, shoulders back, one hand in her blazer pocket, chin level, gaze steady and direct into the camera — small against the architecture but poised and dominant. She wears the same sharp, relaxed charcoal wool blazer with structured shoulders and the fine cherry-red silk detail at the lapel, from the first reference. Hair moves softly in the open air. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. Fair warm skin with visible pores, faint freckles over the nose and cheekbones, warm golden-hour light on her face. Eyes: warm brown irises with a soft catchlight, individual lashes with a natural curl. Hair: individual strands with a few soft flyaways lit warm by the low sun. THE SETTING: Rising behind and above her, a colossal maximalist structure — an ornate neoclassical-baroque facade of towering fluted columns, deeply carved cornices and friezes, sculpted stone figures and caryatids, gilded accents catching the last light, grand arched windows, a monumental sweeping staircase of weathered pale stone with patina and age. Every surface is dense with elaborate ornament. The building fills the upper two-thirds of the frame and dwarfs her; depth recedes along the vast steps and columns. A real, weathered, imposing landmark — not a clean render. THE LIGHT: Low warm golden-hour sun raking across the ornate stone from frame-left, igniting the carvings and gilding into glowing relief and throwing long deep shadows across the steps; the sky deepening to warm amber near the horizon and cooler blue above. The same low sun lights her warmly on the key side, soft ambient sky fill on the shadow side. Natural light only; her shadow and the building's shadows fall together to frame-right. THE KEY DETAILS: The dense ornamental carving and gilding of the facade as the visual spectacle; the cherry-red silk at the lapel as the single saturated accent against warm stone; long raking shadows down the grand steps; warm rim light on her hair. THE MOOD: An opulent luxury-power campaign at golden hour — grand, cinematic, aspirational. Colour grade: warm golden highlights, rich amber-and-blue, deep shadows. THE COMPOSITION: She sits off-centre on a lower rule-of-thirds intersection, the monumental ornate structure towering above and behind filling the negative space, strong leading lines from the columns and steps drawing to her, adequate headroom, portrait orientation. Eye-level. THE CAMERA: Cinematic capture — a 50mm-equivalent lens holding both her and the grand architecture in rich deep focus, warm golden-hour natural light, an opulent warm-and-blue grade with deep shadows, in the vast, awe-scaled manner of a Denis Villeneuve frame. Eye-level.
A grand place behind her makes her read as a big deal, and I didn't change anything about her to get it. The building does it.
Why it works
On the first version my eye slid right past her to the empty background and found nothing to look at. Each change I made back there gave the eye something to land on: texture, then a hard shadow, then a real room, then a place with real scale. She barely moved across all four. Changing the background is what made it start looking like it was shot on location.
Your turn: take one portrait you've made on a plain background and drop her into a single real place, a specific room or street with its own light. That one swap does more than any face tweak will.
Emero builds these sets for you and remembers the ones you like, so your next portrait already has a world to stand in, at cost.
