GPT Image 2.5 Flare - fix one thing in an image without losing the rest

How do you fix one thing in an AI image without the whole picture changing on you?

These three come from a series where I turned internet slang into photos: rage bait, bed rotting and social battery. Each one was good on the first try but had one thing wrong, and a couple of times I fixed it too much and had to come back.

Here's my exact process.

1. Start with one strong image

Rage bait is a tiny businessman, about the size of a thumb, clipped to a fishing line by his belt and screaming his head off. Underneath him a huge bass is exploding out of a lake at sunset, mouth wide open. That's the bait working.

Tiny screaming businessman on a fishing line above a bass leaping out of a lake, made with GPT Image 2.5 Flare
GPT Image 2.5 Flare$0.05

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image of a fishing lure that is a tiny, furious, screaming man in a business suit dangling on a fishing line just above a lake, while a huge largemouth bass explodes out of the water, jaws wide open, lunging at him. THE VIBE: The slang "rage bait" played completely straight and at full intensity — the bait is literally a miniature man in an all-out rage, red-faced and screaming his head off, and it's working: a massive fish is erupting out of the water to bite. Visceral, explosive, absurd, instantly readable, frozen at the peak moment like a dramatic outdoor-sports photo. THE SUBJECT: A tiny man, about the size of a thumb, hanging from a taut clear fishing line by a small steel clip fastened to the back of his belt, his body dangling and twisting just above the water. He is mid-tantrum at full volume: face beet-red, forehead veins bulging, eyes squeezed into a furious glare, mouth stretched wide open in a scream, both tiny fists clenched and raised, legs kicking, tie flung over his shoulder, short brown hair sticking up, a little sweat flying off his brow. He wears a rumpled navy suit, white shirt, loosened red tie and tiny brown dress shoes. He is screaming straight down at the fish, totally unafraid, as if yelling at it. THE FISH: A huge largemouth bass bursting up out of the lake directly beneath him, body half out of the water and arched, gaping mouth stretched wide open just centimetres below his kicking shoes, gills flared, olive-green back with dark mottled lateral stripes, white belly, eye fixed on the tiny man. Water exploding around it — a crown splash, sheets of water streaming off its sides, droplets frozen mid-air and catching the light. THE SETTING: A calm lake at golden hour, the water's surface glassy beyond the splash, reeds and lily pads at the edge, a pine-lined shoreline soft in the distance. In the upper-left corner, the tip of a bent fishing rod and the line running down to the tiny man; the fisherman's hand on the reel just visible at the very edge. THE LIGHT: Low golden-hour sun from behind and to the right as THE KEY source — backlighting the splash so every droplet glows gold, rim-lighting the fish's wet scales and the tiny man's hair and suit edges; warm light on the man's furious red face. Deep teal water in shadow below. Unified light across man, fish and water. THE KEY DETAILS: The tiny man's full-body screaming tantrum and the giant fish's open jaws just below him are the punchline. Frozen action, high shutter speed. No text, no logos, no brand names anywhere. THE MOOD: Dramatic outdoor-sports action with one surreal rule, warm golden grade against cool teal water, punchy contrast. THE COMPOSITION: Portrait frame. The tiny man dangles in the upper-middle of the frame, sharp and large enough that his face and fists read clearly; the bass erupts from the lower-middle, its open mouth reaching up toward him; splash spraying outward across the lower half; the line running diagonally up to the rod tip in the upper-left. Low camera angle just above the water surface. THE CAMERA: Close-up action shot from just above water level, crisp frozen motion, deep focus with everything sharp; looks like a real viral nature photo.

I loved it, but I wanted him angrier.

2. Use it as the reference and change one thing

I attached that image and started the prompt with the change in one line: his face much redder and cartoon steam coming out of his ears. Then I went through everything else and marked it UNCHANGED: his pose, his suit, the fish, the lake, the light, the framing. I even wrote "do NOT change his pose" so the model knew which parts were off limits.

The red face came out great. The steam came out way too big, two giant clouds blasting across half the frame.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image, but with the tiny man's face much redder and cartoon-style steam blasting out of his ears. Preserve everything else from the first reference exactly. THE VIBE: The slang "rage bait" at maximum intensity — the tiny screaming businessman on the fishing line is now so furious he's literally steaming, like a cartoon character about to blow, while the giant bass erupts to bite him. Visceral, explosive, absurd, instantly readable. THE SUBJECT (UNCHANGED POSE): The same tiny man from the first reference — rumpled navy suit, white shirt, loose red tie, brown shoes, messy brown hair — hanging from the same clip on the line, same pose: fists clenched and raised, legs kicking, mouth wide open screaming down at the fish. Do NOT change his pose, outfit or position. THE NEW CHANGE: His face, ears and neck are now a deep, saturated tomato-red, almost crimson — the whole head flushed far beyond normal, darkest at the cheeks and forehead, bulging veins at the temples and neck, eyes squeezed into an intense glare. From BOTH ears, two thick, cartoon-style jets of white steam blast straight out sideways in dense puffy plumes — like a whistling kettle — billowing and curling into round cloud puffs as they spread, backlit golden by the sunset, clearly coming out of his ears. THE FISH (UNCHANGED): The same huge largemouth bass bursting out of the water below him, jaws wide open, exactly as in the first reference. THE SETTING (UNCHANGED): The same golden-hour lake, splash, reeds, lily pads, pine shoreline, sun on the horizon, and the fishing rod and hand in the upper-left, from the first reference. Do NOT reimagine this environment. THE LIGHT (UNCHANGED): The same low golden backlight rim-lighting the splash, fish and man; the steam plumes glow warm gold where the sun hits them. THE MOOD: Dramatic outdoor-sports action with one surreal rule, warm golden grade against teal water, punchy contrast. THE COMPOSITION (UNCHANGED): Same portrait framing and camera position as the first reference — the man in the upper-middle with the steam jets extending out to either side of his head, the bass in the lower-middle. THE CAMERA: Close-up action shot from just above water level, crisp frozen motion, deep focus, everything sharp.

3. Pull back with a size you can see

To shrink the steam, I didn't just say "smaller". I said each puff is roughly the size of his own head, no bigger, and right under the first line I added "NO large cloud plumes" and "NO long steam jets".

I also attached both versions this time. The first one was for the scene, and the second was only for the red face and the bulging veins. I said which image was for which.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image, but with much smaller, subtler steam puffs coming out of the tiny man's ears. Preserve everything else exactly. NO large cloud plumes. NO long steam jets extending across the frame. THE VIBE: The slang "rage bait" at full intensity — the tiny screaming businessman on the fishing line is furious and steaming, while the giant bass erupts to bite him. Visceral, absurd, instantly readable. THE CHARACTER ANCHOR: Preserve the scene from the first reference — the tiny man in the rumpled navy suit, white shirt, loose red tie, brown shoes and messy brown hair, hanging from the clip on the line in the same pose (fists clenched and raised, legs kicking, mouth wide open screaming down at the fish), the same huge largemouth bass erupting below with jaws wide open, the same golden-hour lake, splash, reeds, lily pads, pine shoreline, sunset, and the rod and hand in the upper-left. Do NOT change any of this. THE ITERATION ANCHOR: Carry forward from the second reference his deep tomato-red face, ears and neck, the bulging veins at his temples and neck, and his intense furious glare. THE NEW CHANGE: From each ear, only a small, short, wispy cartoon puff of white steam — each puff roughly the size of his own head, no bigger — two little curling puffs right beside his ears, soft and semi-transparent, backlit gold by the sunset, dissipating quickly into the air. The steam is a small accent, not a cloud; his red face stays the focal point. THE LIGHT (UNCHANGED): The same low golden backlight rim-lighting the splash, fish and man; the small steam puffs glow faintly gold. THE MOOD: Dramatic outdoor-sports action with one surreal rule, warm golden grade against teal water, punchy contrast. THE COMPOSITION (UNCHANGED): Same portrait framing and camera position as the first reference — the man in the upper-middle, the bass in the lower-middle. THE CAMERA: Close-up action shot from just above water level, crisp frozen motion, deep focus, everything sharp.

4. Name the look you want gone

Bed rotting is a woman scrolling her phone in bed, so long that her bed has started rotting. My first try came out cozy: soft green moss, ferns and cute little mushrooms. It looked like a forest cabin and it just didn't really read "rotting".

Woman scrolling her phone in a bed covered in green moss and ferns, made with GPT Image 2.5 Flare
GPT Image 2.5 Flare$0.05

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image of a young woman lying in bed scrolling her phone, with moss, ferns and little mushrooms literally growing over her and her duvet, as if she hasn't moved in weeks. THE VIBE: The slang "bed rotting" played completely straight — she has been rotting in bed so long that nature has started reclaiming her: a soft carpet of green moss creeping over the duvet and pillows, ferns sprouting from the folds, clusters of tiny mushrooms growing along her blanket and the headboard. She's completely content, scrolling, cosy, unbothered. Absurd, gross-cute, instantly readable, captured as a casual phone snapshot from the bedroom doorway. THE SUBJECT: A woman in her mid-twenties with messy shoulder-length brown hair in a loose claw clip, light olive skin, bare face with faint under-eye shadows, wearing an oversized faded grey crewneck sweatshirt. She lies propped against two pillows, the duvet pulled up to her chest, holding her phone above her face with both hands, its glow lighting her face, a small lazy half-smile, completely relaxed. A tiny tuft of moss sits on her shoulder and a single small mushroom grows from the duvet right by her elbow. THE OVERGROWTH: Lush, real, damp-looking living moss in several shades of green spreads across the white duvet in soft cushiony patches, thickest at the edges and folds, creeping onto the pillows and up the wooden headboard. Small ferns unfurl from the duvet folds and the bedside. Clusters of tiny tan and white mushrooms, and a few small orange ones, sprout along the blanket edges, the headboard and the bedside table. A few strands of ivy trail down the side of the bed toward the floor. Real textures — spongy moss, delicate fern fronds, gills under the mushroom caps, faint dew drops. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. THE SETTING: A small, cluttered apartment bedroom in the late afternoon: an unmade double bed with a wooden headboard, a bedside table overgrown with moss and holding a half-empty glass of water, an empty takeout container, a tangle of phone chargers and a stack of untouched books; clothes piled on a chair; the curtains mostly drawn with a slice of hazy light coming through; a mug on the floor with moss growing out of it; a houseplant on the windowsill that looks thriving. THE LIGHT: Dim, soft, late-afternoon light. A narrow shaft of warm hazy daylight through the gap in the curtains is THE KEY source, falling across the foot of the bed and catching floating dust motes and the dewy moss; her phone screen adds a cool glow on her face and hands; the rest of the room sits in soft, dim shadow. Unified light across her, the overgrowth and the room. THE KEY DETAILS: The moss, ferns and mushrooms growing over her bed and her blissful phone-scrolling are the punchline. No text, no logos, no brand names anywhere — the phone screen shows only a soft blur of colour. THE MOOD: Cosy, lazy, slightly damp bedroom realism with one surreal rule, muted warm grade with rich mossy greens, soft contrast. THE COMPOSITION: Portrait frame shot from the bedroom doorway at standing eye level, angled slightly down at the bed. The overgrown bed fills the centre and lower part of the frame with her propped up at the head of the bed in the upper-middle; the bedside table and window to one side. THE CAMERA: Shot on an iPhone at standing eye level, deep focus, everything sharp, NO background blur; casual social-media snapshot.

So I kept her and the room, and listed exactly what to drop: no fresh moss carpet, no pretty ferns, no cottagecore look. Then I described real rot: yellowed sheets, fuzzy mold, black mildew in the seams, rotting fruit with fruit flies, a dead plant, a damp stain on the wall. I said she stays clean, and the rot is only on the bed and the room.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image, but with the pretty forest overgrowth replaced by unmistakable rot and decay. Preserve the woman, her pose and the bedroom layout from the first reference. NO lush fresh green moss carpet. NO pretty ferns. NO cottagecore forest look. THE VIBE: The slang "bed rotting" played completely straight — she has been rotting in bed so long that the bed itself is literally decomposing around her: mouldy, damp, decaying, fruit flies in the air, while she lies there perfectly content, scrolling. Gross, funny, instantly readable as ROT, captured as a casual phone snapshot from the doorway. THE SUBJECT (UNCHANGED): The same woman from the first reference — messy brown hair in a claw clip, light olive skin, oversized grey sweatshirt — propped on pillows in the same pose, holding her phone above her face, content little smile, phone glow on her face. Do NOT change her. She herself is clean and unharmed; the rot is on the bed and room only. THE NEW CHANGE — THE ROT: The duvet and pillows, once white, are now dingy yellowed and grey-brown, blotched with damp water stains and spreading patches of fuzzy mould — fluffy grey-white and blue-green mould colonies, dark black mildew speckles creeping along the seams and folds. Brown, slimy-looking shelf fungus and clusters of pale, drooping, decaying mushrooms grow from the headboard and the corners of the mattress. The bedside table holds a fruit bowl of rotting, shrivelled, mouldy bananas and soft collapsed oranges with fuzzy green mould, a half-drunk glass of water with a film on top, an old takeout container growing mould. A cloud of tiny fruit flies hovers over the fruit bowl and above the bed. The houseplant on the windowsill is dead, brown and wilted, dropped leaves on the sill. A damp brown stain spreads across the wall above the headboard. The mug on the floor has fuzzy mould growing out of it. THE SETTING (UNCHANGED): The same small cluttered bedroom from the first reference — wooden headboard, bedside table, drawn curtains with a gap of hazy light, clothes piled on a chair, framed photos on the wall. Do NOT reimagine the layout. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. THE LIGHT: The same dim late-afternoon light — a narrow shaft of murky, dusty daylight through the curtain gap catching floating dust and the fruit flies; her phone's cool glow on her face; the rest of the room dim, slightly greenish-grey and stale. THE KEY DETAILS: The visibly mouldy, decaying bed and fruit flies around a perfectly content woman are the punchline. No text, no logos, no brand names anywhere. THE MOOD: Grim, stale, damp bedroom realism with one surreal rule, desaturated sickly yellow-grey-green grade, soft contrast. THE COMPOSITION (UNCHANGED): Same portrait framing and camera position from the bedroom doorway as the first reference. THE CAMERA: Shot on an iPhone at standing eye level, deep focus, everything sharp, NO background blur; casual social-media snapshot.

Better, but I wanted it way more dramatic. So I pushed it again, still using her from the first version and the room from the second: a sagging mattress, a cracked bed frame, mold thick like fur, mushrooms the size of dinner plates, wallpaper peeling off in strips.

Same woman in a collapsing fungus-covered bed in a ruined bedroom, made with GPT Image 2.5 Flare
GPT Image 2.5 Flare$0.05

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image, but with the rot pushed to an extreme, dramatic level — the bed and room look abandoned for years. Preserve the woman exactly. THE VIBE: The slang "bed rotting" at maximum — the bed has decomposed so far it looks like a horror-movie set, a sagging, collapsing, fungus-choked ruin, and in the middle of it she lies perfectly content, scrolling her phone with a little smile. The contrast between total decay and her blissful calm is the joke. Gross, dramatic, instantly readable as ROT, captured as a casual phone snapshot from the doorway. THE CHARACTER ANCHOR: Preserve the woman from the first reference — messy brown hair in a claw clip, light olive skin, oversized grey sweatshirt — propped on pillows holding her phone above her face, the same content little smile, phone glow on her face. She herself is clean and unharmed; the rot is on the bed and room only. Do NOT change her. THE ITERATION ANCHOR: Carry forward from the second reference the doorway camera position, the room layout, the mouldy fruit bowl with fruit flies, the dead houseplant and the murky shaft of light through the curtains. THE NEW CHANGE — EXTREME ROT: - The mattress has collapsed and sagged deep in the middle, the bed frame cracked and leaning, one leg rotted through. - The duvet is barely recognisable as fabric: soaked, blackened and brown, rotted through with holes, matted under thick fuzzy carpets of mould — grey-white, blue-green and black — that look like dense fur, with slimy dark wet patches glistening. - Huge clusters of pale and brown mushrooms, some the size of dinner plates, plus big shelf fungi, burst out of the headboard, the mattress edges and the floor around the bed; fungal threads web across the pillows. - The wall behind the bed: wallpaper peeling off in long curling strips, black mould blooming across it in a huge stain spreading up to the ceiling, water damage dripping. - The ceiling above has a sagging brown water-stained bulge. - Thick cobwebs hang from the headboard, lamp and corners; a heavy layer of dust and debris coats every surface. - The bedside table is buried under a pile of mouldy takeout containers, rotten fruit collapsed into black mush, a glass of cloudy murky water; a dense swarm of fruit flies over it. - The floor: rotted floorboards and carpet with dark wet stains, scattered dead leaves from the dead plant, mould creeping out from under the bed. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. THE LIGHT: Murky, stale, dusty light — a single narrow shaft of grimy daylight through torn curtains catching thick floating dust, spores and fruit flies; her phone's cool glow is the cleanest, brightest light in the room, lighting her calm face; everything else dim, damp and sickly. THE KEY DETAILS: The extreme, collapsing, fungus-choked decay all around her versus her content phone-scrolling is the punchline. No text, no logos, no brand names anywhere. THE MOOD: Abandoned-house horror decay with one surreal rule, desaturated sickly yellow-grey-green grade, deep shadows, moderate contrast. THE COMPOSITION: Same portrait framing and doorway camera position as the second reference — the ruined bed filling the centre and lower frame, her propped at the head of the bed in the upper-middle. THE CAMERA: Shot on an iPhone at standing eye level, deep focus, everything sharp, NO background blur; casual social-media snapshot.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image of a young woman at a crowded house party with a giant battery strapped to her back like a backpack, its charge indicator glowing red on empty, as she slumps drained against the wall while the party rages around her. THE VIBE: The phrase "social battery" played completely straight — she has a literal oversized battery on her back, and it's completely drained: the charge bars are down to one blinking red sliver. She's slumped against the hallway wall, eyes half-closed, holding a warm drink, utterly out of power, while everyone else is still dancing and shouting. Absurd, painfully relatable, instantly readable, captured as a casual phone snapshot from across the room. THE SUBJECT: A woman in her mid-twenties with dark brown hair in a slightly collapsing high ponytail, warm medium-brown skin, small gold hoops, wearing a black cropped cardigan over a white tank top and baggy jeans, white sneakers. She leans back against the wall, shoulders slumped, head tipped back slightly, eyes heavy and half-closed, mouth flat, completely drained, holding a red plastic cup loosely at her side. THE BATTERY: Strapped to her back with black padded backpack straps across her shoulders and chest, a giant cylindrical AA-style battery about as long as her torso — a glossy black body with a copper-gold top band and a raised metal positive terminal sticking up behind her head. On its side facing the camera, a small built-in glowing charge-indicator panel of five horizontal segments: four are dark and empty, only the bottom one glows a weak, blinking red. No numbers, no words, no logos on the battery — just the glowing segments. THE CHARACTERS: All around her, the party is at full energy: a group of friends mid-dance in the living room with arms in the air, two guys shouting a story to each other with drinks raised, a woman laughing hard on the couch, someone holding up a phone flashlight, people crowding the kitchen doorway. Nobody notices her. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation, slight sheen of tiredness. THE SETTING: A crowded apartment house party at night: a narrow hallway opening into a living room, string fairy lights taped along the ceiling, a coloured LED strip glowing pink and blue, a speaker on a shelf, coats piled on a chair, red cups and bottles with no readable labels on every surface, a few balloons, chip bowls, a framed poster with no readable text. THE LIGHT: Party lighting — pink, blue and purple LED glow and warm fairy lights as THE KEY sources, with the occasional white flash from a phone; the dancing crowd is brightly lit and colourful, while her spot by the hallway wall is dimmer and cooler, the weak red glow of her battery indicator casting a faint red light on her shoulder and the wall behind her. Unified light across her and the party. THE KEY DETAILS: The giant battery backpack on empty with one blinking red segment, and her total exhaustion amid the high-energy party, are the punchline. No text, no numbers, no logos, no brand names anywhere. THE MOOD: House-party realism with one surreal rule, saturated pink-blue party grade, moderate contrast, slight phone low-light grain. THE COMPOSITION: Portrait frame shot from across the hallway at standing eye level, slightly angled so the battery on her back and its glowing red indicator are clearly visible. She stands left of centre against the wall, full body; the lively party fills the right side and background. THE CAMERA: Shot on an iPhone in low light at standing eye level, deep focus, everything sharp, NO background blur; casual social-media snapshot.

I wanted her turned around, facing the wall with her forehead on it, completely done. A pose change moves a lot of the picture, so I didn't call it an edit. I called it a new photo taken at the same party, then locked her down: same hair, same hoops, same cardigan, same jeans. Turning her around also put the battery's red bar facing the camera, which made the joke read even faster.

Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph taken at the same crowded house party from the start — not a composite — with the woman in a new pose: facing the wall, forehead pressed against it, head hanging, completely drained. THE VIBE: The phrase "social battery" played completely straight — her giant battery backpack is on empty, one red segment left, and she has given up entirely: turned to face the hallway wall, forehead resting against it, head drooping, arms hanging limp, like a phone left to die. Behind her, the party is still at full energy. Absurd, painfully relatable, instantly readable. IDENTITY LOCK: Preserve the woman from the first reference — dark brown hair in a collapsing high ponytail, warm medium-brown skin, small gold hoops, black cropped cardigan, white tank top, baggy light-wash jeans, white sneakers. Do NOT source her look from anyone else. THE POSE (NEW): She stands facing the wall with her back mostly to the camera, angled slightly so a sliver of her profile is visible. Her forehead rests flat against the wall, her head hanging forward and slightly down, her ponytail flopping to one side. Her shoulders are slumped and rounded, arms hanging limp at her sides, the red plastic cup dangling loosely from her fingertips, about to slip. Her weight sags into the wall, knees slightly bent. THE BATTERY (UNCHANGED): The same giant black-and-copper AA-style battery strapped to her back with black padded straps, from the first reference, its positive terminal sticking up behind her head. Because she faces the wall, the battery now faces the camera directly, its charge-indicator panel of five segments fully visible: four dark and empty, only the bottom one glowing a weak blinking red. No numbers, no words, no logos. THE CHARACTERS (UNCHANGED): The same lively party from the first reference behind and beside her — people dancing with arms raised, two guys shouting with drinks, a woman laughing on the couch, someone holding up a phone flashlight. THE FACE: Natural skin texture, no airbrushing, no plastic or waxy skin, real skin with subtle tonal variation. THE SETTING (UNCHANGED): The same apartment hallway and living room — fairy lights, pink and blue LED strips, balloons, red cups, bottles, chip bowls, a coat-piled chair. Do NOT reimagine this environment. THE LIGHT (UNCHANGED): The same pink, blue and purple party glow and warm fairy lights; her spot by the wall dimmer and cooler; the battery's weak red indicator casting a faint red glow on her back and the wall. THE MOOD: House-party realism with one surreal rule, saturated pink-blue party grade, moderate contrast, slight phone low-light grain. THE COMPOSITION: Portrait frame shot from across the hallway at standing eye level, angled from behind her. She stands left of centre against the wall, full body, the battery and its red indicator clearly visible as the focal point; the party fills the right side and background. THE CAMERA: Shot on an iPhone in low light at standing eye level, deep focus, everything sharp, NO background blur; casual social-media snapshot.

Why it works

Every fix started from the last image I liked, with the change written first and everything else marked as staying. When a fix went too far, like the steam, I pulled it back with a size I could see in the picture. When the whole vibe was off, like the cozy moss, I named the look I wanted gone.

Your turn: take an image you almost like, write down the one thing that's wrong, and list everything else as UNCHANGED before you hit generate.

Emero keeps every version in one place, so you can always go back a step when a fix overshoots, at cost.
