Four close-up shots that show off a skincare formula, made from a single product photo

Why do some skincare ads make you want to stick your finger in the jar?

It's almost always the texture. So I made four shots of a Korean clay mask by Beauty of Joseon that are all about how the formula looks up close. I'm not working with the brand on this one. I started from a plain photo of the closed jar and wrote one prompt per shot.

Here's the process.

1. Float the jar over a pool of cream

First shot: the jar floating over a pool of glossy pink cream, lid on, tilted a little, label facing the camera. The cream swirls in a slow spiral underneath, and a small splash reaches up toward the jar.

The label came out sharp. Every line on it reads, from the Korean logo at the top down to the small brand line at the bottom.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image. Preserve the exact product from the first reference: the cylindrical skincare jar with the smooth matte dusty-rose red-bean-pink body, the clean white rounded screw cap, and the square off-white textured paper label. THE VIBE: A dreamy candy-luxury beauty campaign in a monochrome pink world — everything glossy, tactile, almost edible. The jar floats weightless above a sea of liquid pink cream, serene and irresistible. THE SUBJECT: The jar from the first reference, lid on, suspended mid-frame in a slight three-quarter view, tilted about 10 degrees, no visible support. Matte satin finish on the pink body with a soft gradient from blush on the lit side to deep rose on the shadow side; the white cap has a gentle satin sheen. THE SETTING: Below and around the jar, an undulating pool of thick, glossy bubblegum-pink cream swirling in a soft vortex, lacquer-wet surface with sweeping curves and folds, like poured pink gel. The swirl rises toward the jar, a soft crest reaching up beneath it. THE LIGHT: Soft diffused overhead studio key from top-left, creating long crisp white specular streaks along every curve of the cream; a gentle rim light separating the jar from the background; subtle pink bounce light from the cream onto the underside of the jar. Pastel, punchy pink grade. THE KEY DETAILS: Tiny droplets and a thin strand of pink cream lifting off the crest toward the jar; faint reflection of the jar in the glossy cream below. THE MOOD: Candy-coated luxury skincare hero shot — sweet, sensual, hyperreal. THE COMPOSITION: Jar dominant in the upper-centre third, large and razor-sharp; cream swirl filling the lower two-thirds and edges of the frame, softly defocused at the far edges. Vertical 9:16. THE CAMERA: Editorial beauty campaign capture, macro product lens, shallow depth of field on the far cream, product tack-sharp. THE LABEL: Foreground the square off-white label facing camera: the black brush-calligraphy Korean logo with the small red seal stamp, and below it the serif text "Red Bean Refreshing Pore Mask" and "Beauty of Joseon", accurate and legible. Every element feels tactile and present, hyperreal, highly detailed. No blown highlights, no composited feel.

2. Open the jar and show what's inside

Then I opened it up. The lid rests against the side of the jar, and inside I asked for a thick whipped mask with a swirled peak and tiny red bean speckles through it, plus a small smear on the surface next to the jar and a few soap bubbles rising out.

You can see the speckles in the swirl and in the smear. That's the part I'd zoom into for a story or a thumbnail.

Create a new photorealistic image. Preserve the exact product from the first reference: the cylindrical skincare jar with the smooth matte dusty-rose red-bean-pink body, the white rounded cap, and the square off-white paper label. THE VIBE: An intimate, dreamy macro of the formula itself — soft, creamy, whipped, with iridescent bubbles floating up like the mask is breathing. Sweet and tactile, you want to touch it. THE SUBJECT: The jar from the first reference, open, its white cap resting tilted against the jar's side. Inside, a thick, velvety, whipped mauve-pink cream-clay mask with a soft swirled peak, fine speckles of ground red bean visible in the texture, a smooth glossy sheen on the swirl ridges. THE SETTING: The jar sits on a glossy pale-pink lacquered surface with a soft reflection; background a smooth blush-to-bubblegum pink gradient, softly out of focus. THE LIGHT: Soft diffused key from top-left, gentle backlight catching the bubbles so they glow with rainbow iridescence; subtle specular glints on the cream ridges. Pastel pink grade with iridescent green-violet-gold accents only on the bubbles. THE KEY DETAILS: Five to seven translucent soap bubbles of varying sizes rising from the jar opening, thin-film rainbow sheen; a small dollop of mask resting on the surface beside the jar. THE MOOD: Dreamy, fresh, soft — the refreshing moment. THE COMPOSITION: Three-quarter high angle looking slightly down into the jar; jar in lower-centre, bubbles floating upward into the upper frame. Vertical 9:16. THE CAMERA: Macro beauty capture, shallow depth of field, focus on the cream swirl, background and far bubbles softly blurred. THE LABEL: The label is visible on the jar side in soft focus, the black calligraphy logo readable; fine print de-emphasised. Tactile, hyperreal, highly detailed.

3. Put it on a face

Now the mask on skin. I asked for a tight face shot with the mask on her cheeks and forehead and the jar held up by her cheek. I also described her skin in detail: visible pores, peach fuzz, real lashes. If you skip that, faces tend to come out smooth and plastic.

What broke: I asked for the tip of her nose to stay clear, and the mask went over her whole nose anyway. It still looks like someone mid-routine, so I kept it.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image. Preserve the exact product from the first reference: the cylindrical skincare jar with the smooth matte dusty-rose red-bean-pink body, white rounded cap, and square off-white paper label with black calligraphy logo. THE VIBE: An intimate, playful beauty close-up — mid-ritual, mask on, bubbles drifting around her face like she's inside a dream. Soft, pink, tactile, joyful. THE SUBJECT: A woman in her mid-20s with light skin with warm-golden East Asian undertone, glossy straight black hair tucked behind her ears, soft brows. A smooth, even layer of mauve-pink cream-clay mask with fine red-bean speckles covers her cheeks and forehead, leaving eyes, nose tip and lips clear; lips a natural glossy pink. She holds the jar from the first reference up beside her cheek with her fingertips, label toward camera, head tilted slightly, a small half-smile, eyes looking just past the lens. THE FACE: Close-up realism — visible pores on her nose and around the mask edges, fine peach fuzz, soft catchlight in dark brown eyes, individual lashes, natural lip texture; golden-neutral complexion with no imposed rosy flush; the mask has a matte velvety texture with slight natural thickness at the edges. No plastic skin. THE SETTING: A smooth bubblegum-pink backdrop. THE LIGHT: Soft diffused beauty dish from front-top, gentle fill, backlight catching a few floating soap bubbles so they glow iridescent. Pastel pink grade. THE KEY DETAILS: Four translucent iridescent soap bubbles floating near her face, one in soft focus in the foreground. THE MOOD: Self-care as candy — fresh, sweet, fun. THE COMPOSITION: Tight head-and-shoulders beauty crop, face in the upper-centre with comfortable headroom, jar near her cheek in the lower third. Vertical 9:16. THE CAMERA: Editorial beauty capture, 100mm macro portrait lens, shallow depth of field, eyes and jar label sharp. THE LABEL: The label is readable: black calligraphy logo with small red seal and "Red Bean Refreshing Pore Mask".

4. End on the fresh feeling

For the last one I only wanted bubbles floating in a pink haze. I asked for the jar to show up as a tiny reflection on the biggest bubble. Instead the model put the whole jar inside the bubble, floating right in the middle.

It's not what I asked for, but you can still make out the jar and its label in there, so it works as the closing shot.

Exact prompt

Create a new photorealistic image. Preserve the exact product from the first reference: the cylindrical skincare jar with the smooth matte dusty-rose red-bean-pink body, white rounded cap, and square off-white paper label. THE VIBE: A weightless dream of floating soap bubbles in a pink haze — light, airy, iridescent, where the product appears only as a tiny reflection. Delicate and hypnotic. THE SUBJECT: A cluster of translucent soap bubbles of many sizes floating in the air, thin-film iridescent surfaces swirling with rainbow sheens of magenta, violet, green and gold. In the largest bubble, centre frame, a small distorted curved reflection of the jar from the first reference is visible on the bubble's surface. THE SETTING: A soft glossy pink satin-like environment, blurred bubblegum and rose tones, with glowing out-of-focus bokeh. THE LIGHT: Soft backlight shining through the bubbles so their edges glow, bright specular window highlights on each bubble, soft pink bounce everywhere. Pastel pink grade with iridescent accents. THE KEY DETAILS: Tiny glints and crisp thin edges on the bubbles; some bubbles touching and clustered; the jar reflection recognisable as the pink body and white cap. THE MOOD: Dreamy, fresh, airy — a clean-skin feeling. THE COMPOSITION: Largest bubble centred, smaller bubbles in foreground and background layers, several foreground bubbles soft and out of focus. Vertical 9:16. THE CAMERA: Macro capture, shallow depth of field, focus on the largest bubble.

Why it works

Each shot shows a different moment of using the mask: the cream, the open jar, the mask on skin and the clean feeling after. None of them need a big set, so I spent all my words on how the cream, the skin and the bubbles should look up close.

Your turn: shoot your product open with the formula showing before you try anything fancier.

Emero writes these prompts for you and remembers your product so the label holds up in every shot, at cost.
