Nano Banana Pro - turn a flash phone snapshot into a warm film editorial
Swap a flat flash snapshot for one hard warm light and the same man reads as expensive
How much of a difference does lighting make in an image? And how do you control it? I wanted to test this.
I took a dull phone snapshot, flat flash, plain wall, straight on, and used it as the reference for a warm film editorial of the same man. None of this is for a client, this was just a test.
Here's my exact process.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. Editorial fashion photography, unretouched, no beauty filter, no skin smoothing. A deliberately cheap, amateur, boring portrait snapshot of a man — the kind of flat uninspired photo anyone takes on a phone. THE VIBE: A dull, flat, generic snapshot — no styling, no mood, no craft. Ordinary and unflattering, like a quick phone photo against a wall. IDENTITY LOCK: A man in his early thirties with short dark-brown hair, light stubble, warm medium skin tone with a neutral undertone, brown eyes, an average relaxed everyday face, a neutral closed-mouth expression. THE SUBJECT: He stands squared dead-centre to the camera, straight-on, shoulders flat, looking directly into the lens with a slightly stiff neutral expression, arms at his sides. He wears a plain grey crew-neck t-shirt. THE FACE: Real, unretouched skin with fine visible texture, faint pores, slightly uneven natural tone, a few tiny imperfections. Mostly matte. His warm medium skin keeps a natural neutral undertone, never plastic. No flattering light — the flat flash washes it slightly. THE SETTING: A plain, blank beige-white wall directly behind him, nothing else, no depth, no decor. THE LIGHT: Harsh flat on-camera flash — bright, even, frontal, washed-out, a hard little shadow outline on the wall behind him, no direction, no mood, no shaping. Flat and unflattering. THE MOOD: Boring, flat, generic; a plain neutral slightly washed grade. THE COMPOSITION: Dead-centre, symmetrical, head-and-shoulders, straight-on at eye level, even margins, the lazy default framing, 16:9 landscape with the subject centred and lots of dead wall on both sides. THE CAMERA: A plain phone snapshot look — shot on a phone with flash, everything flatly in focus, no depth of field, no character, slightly flat colour. Fine natural film grain across the whole frame including the face. Ordinary and uninspired.
1. Start with the cheapest photo I could make
I asked for a plain phone photo with flash, straight on, arms at his sides, against a bare wall. It's close to the default snapshot most of us take, so it's a fair before.
2. Keep the face and let the prompt handle the rest
I used the snapshot as the only reference. The face comes from that photo. The clothes come from my written description, because the snapshot shows a plain grey t-shirt, not the layered outfit I wanted.
3. Swap the flash for one hard warm light
The flash washed everything flat. I asked for one hard, low, warm light from the upper side, with no fill and no cool tones. The shadows went deep and hard-edged, and the knit ribbing picked up highlights.
4. Dress him in layers and lower his head
I described oversized layers: a chunky oatmeal ribbed scarf, a stone-taupe trench, a cream linen overshirt and bone-coloured trousers. I also asked for a three-quarter turn with the head lowered and the shoulders rounded. This is a styling test in words, not a photo of real garments.

Exact prompt
Create a new photorealistic image. This is a photograph shot on warm analog film from the start, not a composite. Editorial fashion photography, unretouched, no beauty filter, no skin smoothing. A moody, warm, grainy quiet-luxury menswear editorial of the SAME man — an art-directed film photograph with a committed earthy palette and a single hard warm light. IDENTITY LOCK: Preserve the man from the first reference — same face, short dark-brown hair, light stubble, warm medium skin tone, same features. Do NOT change who he is. His head is lowered and turned slightly so his face is partly in shadow but still recognizably him. He is relit entirely by this scene's single warm hard light; the reference's flat flash lighting is completely discarded. THE VIBE: A warm, grainy, analog quiet-luxury editorial — oatmeal, taupe, camel and bone tones against deep chocolate-brown, a single hard golden light, heavy film grain. Contemplative, intimate, understated-expensive, a little melancholic. About form, fabric and mood more than the face. THE SUBJECT: He stands turned three-quarters, head bowed and tilted down, shoulders rounded inward in a quiet, introspective posture, hands low near his waist loosely adjusting the hem of a layer. He is dressed in oversized, draped, layered neutral menswear: a chunky oatmeal ribbed-knit scarf wrapped high around his neck and over one shoulder, a slouchy stone-taupe oversized trench coat, a cream linen overshirt, and relaxed bone-coloured linen trousers. Everything oversized, soft, rumpled and tonal — archival quiet-luxury styling. THE FACE: Real, unretouched skin with fine visible texture, faint pores, slightly uneven tone, a few tiny imperfections. Mostly matte. Warm medium skin keeping its living warm undertone, half in warm shadow; stubble as individual hairs. The face is partly shadowed and lowered, not the focal point. THE SETTING: A deep, warm chocolate-brown seamless studio backdrop with subtle tonal variation, nothing else — just the figure and the warm shadow it casts. THE LIGHT: ONE hard, warm, low directional source (hard golden tungsten / late-afternoon sun) raking across him from the upper side — it carves bright warm highlights along the knit ribbing, the coat folds and the linen, and throws deep, hard-edged warm shadows across the fabric and the backdrop. Sculptural warm chiaroscuro. He sits a little under, the far side falling into deep warm shadow. NO fill, NO second light, NO cool tones. THE KEY DETAILS: The tactile chunky ribbing of the knit, the soft wrinkles and drape of the linen and trench, the hard-edged shadow of the scarf across his chest, warm highlights skimming the fabric texture, the grain sitting in the shadows. THE MOOD: Quiet, nostalgic, contemplative, understated-expensive; a warm faded filmic grade, muted lifted blacks, golden-brown tonality, soft and grainy. THE COMPOSITION: A tight, slightly graphic three-quarter-body crop, the figure filling most of the frame and placed a little off-centre, with warm negative space of brown backdrop and his cast shadow balancing it; 16:9 landscape, composed and intentional. THE CAMERA: Shot on warm analog film — heavy natural film grain across the whole frame including the skin and fabric, a soft grainy organic texture, muted warm faded grade, a single hard warm directional light, medium-telephoto. In the spirit of warm grainy natural-light fashion photography. Looks like a real film editorial scan, not a render. No plastic skin, no extra limbs, no text.
Why it works
Same man, same face. The flash flattened him, and the single warm light gave him shape.
Your turn: take a plain snapshot you already have and describe the light you'd want instead, one hard source from one side.
Emero handles the light and styling prompts for you and remembers them for the next shot, at cost.
